WHY STUDY MEDIA?...
Research shows that teenagers spend more time interacting with the media than any other waking activity. The media influences how people spend their time, helps shape the way they percieve themselves and others, and plays a crucial role in the creation of personal, social, cultural, national and global identities. The media can entertain, educate, inform and provide channels of communication.
Media as a subject is vast and conceptual. The way society interacts with popular mediums can create endless mutations of thought and theory. Studying media provides students with the opportunity to analyse media products and concepts in an informed and critical way. Students will consider media texts, technologies and processes from various perspectives including an analysis of structures and features. They will examine production methods, audience reception and the media's impact on society.
Ultimately, students will learn to deconstruct the media around them, develop a critical understanding of media messages as well as create their own unique media products.

Media pathways at Surf Coast Secondary College...
Media is introduced as a Year 9 elective unit and runs for one semester. Students can continue with Media as a Year 10 elective (again for one semester) before undertaking VCE Media Units 1-4. There are no prerequisites necessary prior to selecting any of these units with the exception of Year 12 where Units 3 and 4 need to be taken sequentially for the full year.
All units are designed to allow students to maximise their exposure to the analysis and exploration of different media types, genres and technologies. From year to year, students will build on previous experiences as they develop higher level analytical and technical skills.
Surf Coast Secondary College prioritises access to technology and as such our media students are supported with range of contemporary teaching practices and production resources to allow each student to maximise their potential in this subject.
